Shipping from Miami: what the location gives you

Warehousing capacity in Miami totals 277 million sq ft, and about 647,000 jobs in the Miami-Fort Lauderdale-Pompano Beach metro are in trade, transportation and utilities, according to preliminary BLS figures for August 2026.

If you sell into Latin America or the Caribbean, the airport is the reason to be here. MIA moved nearly 3.5 million tons of cargo in 2025, more international freight than any other US airport, it has more flights to the region than any other US airport, and roughly a third of all US exports to Latin America and the Caribbean pass through Miami.

By sea, you have two container ports. Port Everglades moved a record 1,167,552 TEUs in fiscal 2025 on a preliminary count, and PortMiami moved 1,115,058, its 11th year in a row above one million. Boxes leave PortMiami by on-dock FEC rail through the Hialeah yard to CSX and Norfolk Southern, or by truck through a tunnel that connects the port straight to the MacArthur Causeway and I-395.

Set against Orlando, an inland market in central Florida, a Miami warehouse gives up the middle-of-the-state position in exchange for two container ports and direct air lanes to Latin America.

What to ask before you sign with a Miami 3PL

  1. Once my container or air shipment lands, how many days until my stock is ready to sell?
  2. Can I tour the building my inventory would sit in?
  3. Is there a monthly minimum spend or order count, and what does onboarding cost?
  4. Who collects my freight at MIA or the port, and what does that trip cost per load?
  5. If I sell supplements, cosmetics or food, which certifications does my building hold: FDA registration, cGMP or food grade?
  6. If I sell into Latin America, how do those export orders and their returns flow?
