Shipping from New Jersey: what the location gives you

A New Jersey warehouse puts your stock within reach of two major metro markets: NJDOT’s 2023 Statewide Freight Plan notes the state’s direct access to New York City and Philadelphia. New Jersey itself had 9,548,215 residents on July 1, 2025.

For imports, the same plan lists marine terminals along both Newark Bay and the Delaware River. The biggest gateway is the Port of New York and New Jersey, the largest port on the US East Coast, which handled 8.9 million TEUs in 2025. When a box continues by train, ExpressRail’s on-dock terminals, including Elizabeth, Newark and Port Jersey, connect to CSX and Norfolk Southern, and they logged 680,364 rail lifts in 2025.

Road does most of the work here: of the more than 600 million tons of goods moving in New Jersey each year, 75 percent travel by truck, and about 1,000 miles of rail freight line are served by short line, regional and national railroads. Air shipments can go through Newark Liberty, which moved about 680,000 tons of cargo in 2025 and came 16th among US airports for all-cargo landed weight in the FAA’s preliminary figures. For staffing, 891,200 people worked in trade, transportation and utilities across the state in August 2026 (preliminary, seasonally adjusted).

What to ask before you sign with a New Jersey 3PL

  1. Is your building closer to New York City or to Philadelphia, and how does that change delivery times to my customers?
  2. How long does a container take to go from the Elizabeth terminal to sellable stock on your shelves?
  3. Is there a monthly minimum fee even though you set no order minimum?
  4. Which retailers' routing guides do you already ship to from New Jersey?
  5. Is the building shared with other brands, or set aside for one customer?
  6. Do you hold food-grade or FDA registration at the exact building you are quoting?
