Shipping from New York City: what the location gives you

The customer base around your stock is large: New York State counted 20.0 million residents and New Jersey 9.55 million on July 1, 2025, and the New York-Newark-Jersey City metro had about 1.58 million people working in trade, transportation and utilities in August 2026 (preliminary). All 10 companies here keep their metro inventory in New Jersey, between Mahwah and Cranbury, and several hold more space elsewhere in New Jersey: ShipBob in Budd Lake, Jackson and Trenton, QuickBox in Wayne, and Maersk in Florence and Burlington.

Imports arrive through the East Coast’s largest port, which moved 8.9 million TEUs in 2025. If your containers travel on by train, the port’s on-dock ExpressRail terminals at Elizabeth, Newark, Staten Island and Jersey City tie into CSX and Norfolk Southern, and those terminals made 680,364 rail lifts in 2025.

For air freight, JFK moved 1.6 million tons of cargo in 2025, and its whole air cargo area is a Foreign-Trade Zone. The FAA’s preliminary count put JFK 9th in the US for all-cargo landed weight, about 4.42 billion lbs, and Newark Liberty handled about 680,000 tons in 2025.

What to ask before you sign with a New York City 3PL

  1. Which town is my stock going to, and how long is the truck run from there to Manhattan and Brooklyn?
  2. Once my container reaches the port, how many days until the stock is ready to ship?
  3. Can I start below 500 orders a month, and what fees apply if I do?
  4. What is your same-day order cutoff, and does it hold through the holiday peak?
  5. If I sell supplements, cosmetics or food, is the building FDA-registered?
