Shipping from Virginia: what the location gives you

Warehouses on this list sit near the ports in Chesapeake, Norfolk and Portsmouth, around Richmond, in Winchester, in Martinsville and across Southwest and Western Virginia. Which part of the state suits you comes down to how your freight arrives and where your customers are.

For imports by sea, the Port of Virginia completed its 55-foot channel in February 2026 and is now the deepest port on the East Coast. It moved 3,499,639 TEUs in fiscal 2024, and rail containers grew 13% to 784,597, and no East Coast port sends a larger share of its cargo by rail.

Rail and water carry containers inland. Virginia Inland Port in Front Royal covers 161 acres on Norfolk Southern and holds 78,000 TEU of capacity, and it is a US Customs port of entry. In Central Virginia, three barges with 500 FEU of combined capacity run between Hampton Roads and Richmond Marine Terminal, so a Richmond warehouse can take import containers by water.

For western Virginia, I-81 carries freight for 325 miles through the state, and the Winchester and Southwest Virginia warehouses on this list sit along that side. Virginia’s own market counts 8.88 million residents as of July 1, 2025, 12th among the states.

What to ask before you sign with a Virginia 3PL

  1. Where in Virginia is your warehouse, and how far is it from the customers I ship to most?
  2. If my containers land at the Port of Virginia, who moves them to your building and what does that leg cost?
  3. Can I start with a small volume and take more space in the same building as I grow?
  4. Do you keep frozen, chilled and ambient stock under one roof?
  5. Which ecommerce platforms and marketplaces do you connect to today?
  6. Where does my inventory go if your building runs out of space in peak season?
