Shipping from California: what the location gives you

Where your buyers live decides where your stock should sit. About 39,593,000 people lived in California on January 1, 2026, and 10 counties each hold more than a million. In the south, Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino counties make up the Los Angeles market, while San Diego County forms the San Diego market. In the north, Santa Clara, Alameda and Contra Costa anchor the Bay Area, with Sacramento and Fresno further inland.

For imported goods, the state has a container port at each end. Stock for Southern California can come through the Port of Los Angeles, which moved 10,239,318 TEUs in 2025, with air shipments through LAX, at 2,229,898 tons of air freight for the year. Up north, the Port of Oakland moved 2,253,976 TEUs and takes almost all of Northern California’s container traffic, so a Bay Area or Central Valley warehouse is fed through Oakland.

Hiring draws on roughly 3,067,800 Californians in trade, transportation and utilities jobs (preliminary, August 2026). If you sell into Mexico, it is California’s biggest export market, buying $34.9 billion of the $188.4 billion in goods the state exported in 2025, the second-highest total of any state.

What to ask before you sign with a California 3PL

  1. Given where my customers are, should my inventory sit in Southern California, Northern California or both?
  2. Can I see the exact building my stock would go into, and do other clients share it?
  3. What monthly volume do you need to take me on, and what does setup cost?
  4. Which of my sales channels plug straight into your system?
  5. When a container lands at Los Angeles or Oakland, how long until my stock is on your shelves?
  6. If I sell food, which of your California buildings are food grade or refrigerated?
