Shipping from the San Francisco Bay Area: what the location gives you

Start with the people you would ship to: almost 7.7 million lived in the nine Bay Area counties in 2025. Hiring draws on roughly 338,300 trade, transportation and utilities workers in the San Francisco-Oakland-Fremont metro and 117,300 in San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara, per preliminary August 2026 counts, and the valley warehouse belt adds 85,800 more in the Stockton-Lodi metro.

Choosing between the East Bay and the valley is mostly a trucking question. I-880 and I-580 tie the Port of Oakland to the San Joaquin Valley, and key stretches of the two carry 15,000 to 37,000 trucks on an average day, according to MTC’s 2015 goods movement plan. A Hayward, San Leandro or Fremont building keeps your stock close to the port and to Bay Area buyers; Stockton, Lathrop and Manteca hold some of the biggest buildings on this list, including 751,021 sq ft in Lathrop.

For imported stock, almost every container moving through Northern California comes through the Port of Oakland, which moved 2,253,976 TEUs in 2025, half inbound and half outbound. The seaport covers 1,300 acres, with four container terminals, two intermodal rail yards and 50-foot channels, and air shipments can use Oakland San Francisco Bay Airport, which handled 1.08 billion pounds of cargo in 2024.

That port makes this the import hub for the northern half of California. If most of your buyers are in the south, weigh this market against Los Angeles, which has its own container port.

What to ask before you sign with a San Francisco Bay Area 3PL

  1. When my container lands at Oakland, how many days until the stock is ready to ship?
  2. Would my products sit in the East Bay or out in Stockton or Manteca, and how does that change delivery times to Bay Area buyers?
  3. Can I start at a small monthly volume, and what does onboarding cost?
  4. Which of my sales channels connect directly to your system?
  5. Do your own drivers deliver locally, or does every order go to a parcel carrier?
  6. Can you hold chilled product, and at what temperature range?
