How Many Shopify Stores Are There? 3.1 Million in 2026

Updated October 10, 20269 min read

Short answer

Store Leads counts 3,103,755 live Shopify stores worldwide in its report updated October 2, 2026, and 1,186,833 of them are in the United States. Shopify publishes no store total of its own: its 2025 annual report places its merchants across more than 175 countries, counts them only as millions, and puts the orders they processed through it at $378.4 billion. Here is each count with its unit, then stores by country, category, catalog size and year.

Shopify has 3.1 million live stores by Store Leads’ October 2026 count

Store Leads, a data provider that crawls online stores and records the platform each one runs on, counted 3,103,755 live Shopify stores in its State of Shopify report updated October 2, 2026. Its third-quarter 2026 count, 3,108,808, was 15.5% above the 2,692,227 of a year earlier, by our arithmetic on its quarterly table. The United States holds 1,186,833 of them, 38.2%.

Shopify gives no number. Its Form 10-K for 2025 says only that at December 31, 2025 its merchants numbered in the “millions” and came from more than 175 countries. What it does report precisely is sales: merchants processed $378.4 billion of gross merchandise volume (GMV) through Shopify in 2025, 29% more than in 2024.

How Store Leads, Shopify and W3Techs count Shopify stores

The figures answer different questions because each source counts a different thing. Store Leads counts store domains it finds live on Shopify. Shopify counts merchants, the businesses using its software, and states them only in round terms. W3Techs, which surveys the technology behind websites, reports shares instead of a count: Shopify runs 5.4% of all the sites in its surveys, 7.8% of those whose content management system it can identify, and 32.2% of the ecommerce systems it detects.

Shopify’s own split puts more of its base in the US. The 10-K places 44% of its merchants in the United States and 31% in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, with 16% in Asia Pacific, which in Shopify’s grouping includes Australia and China, and 5% each in Latin America and Canada.

Further down the list, toys and hobbies has 82,158 stores, pets and animals 78,534 and consumer electronics 55,438, just 1.8% of the total. The largest categories are mostly soft goods and consumables, the kind of products that usually ship as parcels.

Shopify stores by catalog size and team size

Most Shopify stores sell a short list of products. Store Leads finds 837,856 stores, 27.0%, selling 1 to 9 products, and 56.2% selling fewer than 50. At the other end, 182,142 stores, 5.9%, list 1,000 or more.

The bands cover 2,921,449 stores; Store Leads has no product count for the other 182,306. Headcount is thinner data still. Store Leads found an employee figure for 134,278 stores, 4.3% of the total, and 69,627 of those, 51.9%, have 1 to 9 employees. Just 876 have 5,000 or more.

Shopify’s plans point the same way. The 80,050 Plus domains are 2.6% of live stores, yet the 10-K says “the majority” of Shopify’s GMV comes from merchants on the Plus plan. Spread 2025 GMV across the 2,859,828 stores live at the end of 2025 and the average comes to about $132,000 of orders per store; with Plus merchants carrying most of that volume, the typical store sells far less.

How the number of Shopify stores has grown since 2015

Shopify published merchant counts in its early public years. Its 2015 results, released in February 2016, said it “currently powers over 243,000 businesses in approximately 150 countries.” Its 2018 shareholder letter recalled 165,000 merchants in May 2015 and counted “more than 600,000 merchants” in 175 countries by March 2018. The 2025 10-K says “millions.”

Store Leads’ quarterly series starts in 2019. Its count passed 1 million in the fourth quarter of 2019, grew 36.8% through 2020 and has risen every year since, by between 5.5% (2024) and 19.9% (2022), with 18.2% in 2025. It can dip within a year: the first quarter of 2026 came in 1.9% below the end of 2025, and the third quarter then added 8.4% in 3 months.

Sales grew faster than the store count. GMV went from $7.7 billion in 2015 to $378.4 billion in 2025, 49 times larger, with growth of 24% in 2024 and 29% in 2025. Monthly recurring revenue, the value of subscription plans in effect at the end of a period, rose from $11.3 million to $205 million over the same 10 years. In the second quarter of 2026, Shopify reported GMV of $115.6 billion, up 32% on a year earlier.

Merchants also arrive from other platforms. In the 90 days to early October 2026, Store Leads saw 25,772 merchants move to Shopify, 8,554 of them from WooCommerce, and 17,128 move away, a net gain of 8,644.

What 3.1 million Shopify stores mean for a brand buying fulfillment

Every order those stores take still has to be picked, packed and shipped by someone, because Shopify sells the storefront, not the warehouse work. With 56.2% of stores listing fewer than 50 products and most stores with a known headcount under 10 people, the usual Shopify account is a short catalog run by a small team. That profile decides which quote fits: ask whether storage is billed per bin, per shelf or per pallet, whether each new SKU carries a setup fee, and what the monthly minimum is. A 30-SKU brand on pallet pricing pays for space it never fills.

Category decides the handling. Apparel, at 27.0% of stores, multiplies SKUs by size and color, and every exchange is a parcel to receive, inspect and restock, so the return rate a brand plans for belongs in the contract next to the pick fee. The 341,100 beauty and fitness stores and 144,102 health stores sell goods with lot numbers and expiry dates, which need a warehouse system that ships the earliest-expiring stock first and can trace a lot in a recall. The 216,547 food and drink stores add temperature limits, and fewer buildings qualify.

Carrier data points to parcels. Among the stores where Store Leads can see a carrier, USPS appears on 236,769, UPS on 186,204 and FedEx on 147,535. A 3PL quote should name the carriers and services it will rate-shop for each order and say whether postage is billed at cost or with a markup.

Many stores sell beyond Shopify. Store Leads finds a TikTok account on 421,849 Shopify stores, 13.6%, and a brand that turns that account into a shop sends its TikTok Shop orders into the same pick queue as its Shopify orders. On Amazon the choice is between sending stock into Amazon’s warehouses, fulfillment by Amazon (FBA), and shipping marketplace orders from the 3PL, fulfillment by merchant (FBM). Running both means 2 inventory pools to replenish, so ask how the 3PL ships replenishment into Amazon and what it charges for FBA prep.

A brand moving its store onto Shopify, or off it, should ask its 3PL how long a new store connection takes and push live orders through the new integration before the old store closes.

Common questions

How many active Shopify stores are there in 2026?

Store Leads counts 3,103,755 live Shopify stores worldwide as of October 2, 2026. Its third-quarter 2026 count of 3,108,808 was 15.5% above the same quarter of 2025. Shopify itself does not publish a store total.

Why do counts of Shopify stores differ?

Each source counts a different unit. Store Leads counts live store domains, Shopify counts merchants and rounds them to millions, and W3Techs reports Shopify's share of the websites it surveys. A brand with 2 storefronts is 1 merchant but 2 stores.

Does Shopify publish how many merchants it has?

Not as an exact number. Its 2025 Form 10-K counts its merchants only in the millions, spread across more than 175 countries at December 31, 2025, with 44% in the United States, 31% in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, 16% in Asia Pacific, 5% in Latin America and 5% in Canada. The exact counts in the earlier filings we opened were over 243,000 businesses in February 2016 and more than 600,000 merchants in March 2018.

Which country has the most Shopify stores?

How fast is the number of Shopify stores growing?

Store Leads' count rose 15.5% from the third quarter of 2025 to the third quarter of 2026. Yearly growth has swung from 36.8% in 2020 to 5.5% in 2024 and 18.2% in 2025. Shopify's GMV grew faster, up 29% in 2025 and 32% in the second quarter of 2026.

How much do Shopify stores sell in total?

Merchants processed $378.4 billion of gross merchandise volume through Shopify in 2025, the value of orders including shipping and taxes, net of refunds. That was 29% more than the $292.3 billion of 2024. In the second quarter of 2026 alone GMV was $115.6 billion.

How many products does a typical Shopify store sell?

Fewer than 50 in most cases. Store Leads finds 56.2% of live stores selling under 50 products and 27.0% selling 1 to 9. Only 5.9% list 1,000 or more.

How we built this

We took the live-store count and the country, category, catalog-size, headcount, Plus, carrier and platform-switching figures from Store Leads' State of Shopify report, updated October 2, 2026, and the merchant, region, GMV, revenue and MRR figures from Shopify's 2025 Form 10-K, its Q2 2026 results, its 2015 results and its 2018 shareholder letter. W3Techs supplies Shopify's share of surveyed websites. Every share, growth rate and per-store average is our arithmetic on the published figures, and we report each source's unit rather than blending them.
